How Soon Do I Need to Change My Water Heater?
In Colorado hot water heaters normally last ten years or longer, sometimes even up to fifteen years. If yours is that old or even older, you should keep your eyes peeled for some indications that it might no longer be functioning as it should and that it is time to get it replaced.
The easiest way to tell if your hot water heater is coming to the end of its useful life is to notice if it is delivering hot water into your hot water taps upon demand. If it seems to be taking a long time for any hot water to show up, the unit might not be working properly anymore.
In like manner if you take a shower and notice that the hot water goes away if someone in the house flushes a toilet, the same situation may be unfolding.
If your hot water heater is leaking, this could be telling you that something is wrong with the unit. If the leaking is only coming from a valve, that condition might be repairable, but if the unit has been in service for double-digit numbers of years, you will probably need to have it replaced before long anyway, so the least expensive course of action over all would be to just go ahead and have the replacement done rather than doing repairs.
If it is your turn to replace a hot water heater, it would be wise to check out the new technologies being used for heating water, in particular tankless water heaters are commonplace these days. These units, also called on-demand water heaters, are more efficient in terms of operating costs, take up much less space and use less fuel overall to keep a ready supply of hot water in your home.
